If you find that you must surrender your pet to the Humane Society of Charlotte for adoption, here are some things to know:
Often times, there are more homeless animals than space available at the Humane Society of Charlotte so your pet may have to be placed on a waiting list. Time on the waiting list varies. You will be notified about the current length of the waiting list when you call to begin the process of surrendering your pet.
Please fill out the surrender form and send it along with your veterinary records
In order for dogs to be placed on the waiting list:
- They must be current with their Distemper/Parvo (DA2P-CPV), Bordetella, and Rabies vaccinations. Puppies under 16 weeks of age require DA2P-CPV and Bordetella.
- Dogs younger than six months old do not need to be tested for heartworm.
- Vaccination records, including a Rabies Certificate, must be faxed to the Humane Society of Charlotte (704-332-8010) prior to being added to the waiting list.
In order for cats to be placed on the waiting list:
- They must be current with their Distemper (FVRCP) and Rabies vaccinations. Kittens under 16 weeks old require FVRCP only.
- Cats and kittens must have tested negative for Feline leukemia and Feline AIDS.
If you have special circumstances that prevent you from meeting these vaccination requirements, please request additional information. We will be happy to help you.
Unfortunately, the Humane Society of Charlotte cannot accept dogs or cats with a history of aggression towards people and/or other animals. Dogs and cats in declining health (kidney or liver failure, parvo, canine or feline distemper, feline leukemia or AIDS, etc.) may also be declined. In these situations, we will provide additional referral information or assistance in helping you make a humane decision regarding your pet.
