surrender a pet

Pug

The Humane Society of Charlotte strives to keep all our kennels and cat condos full of adoptable animals at all times.  The priority is to utilize space for Mecklenburg County animals in desperate need.   We regularly bring in dogs from Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control.

There will always be more homeless animals than we can accommodate.  If you have an adoptable pet that you need to have re-homed, we recommend you contact all rescue resources in your area.   Click here for a list of rescue groups that are authorized by Animal Care and Control.

Please consider finding your dog or cat another home instead of surrendering him to a shelter because it will be less stressful for your animal, allows you to play a part in uniting him with a new family, and makes additional space available for pets whose lives are at risk.

Please understand that the Humane Society of Charlotte is committed to each of our dogs or cats for life! Because of the quality care administered to all of our homeless pets, we require a $50 surrender fee if your pet is accepted into our adoption program.   This nominal fee does not come close to covering the significant cost of medically caring for, sheltering and adopting out your pet.

Please fill out the surrender form  and contact your veterinarian to obtain all updated medical information. The surrender form along with your veterinary records proving up to date vaccination records, including a Rabies Certificate, must be faxed to us at 704-332-8010.  We will review your information, if your animal is up to date and adoptable, we will contact you to schedule a behavior and medical evaluation to accept your animal into our adoption program. *

Dog Medical Records:

  • Current with their Distemper/Parvo (DA2P-CPV), Bordetella, and Rabies vaccinations. Puppies under 16 weeks of age require DA2P-CPV and Bordetella.
  • Heartworm test results for dogs over 6 months.

Cat Medical Records:

  • Proof of current Distemper (FVRCP) and Rabies vaccinations. Kittens under 16 weeks old require FVRCP only.
  • Negative test result for Feline leukemia and Feline AIDS.

Unfortunately, the Humane Society of Charlotte cannot accept dogs or cats with ringworm,  a history of aggression towards people and/or other animals. Dogs and cats in declining health (kidney or liver failure, parvo, canine or feline distemper, feline leukemia or AIDS, etc.) may also be declined. In these situations, we will provide additional referral information or assistance in helping you make a humane decision regarding your pet.

For additional information, please contact us by email or call us at 704-494-7716.
