1. Pre-payment of the surgery fee is required. Payment can be made with all major debit/credit cards, cash (in person), check or money order. We ask that we receive your payment at least 3 days prior to your pet’s appointment. If after scheduling an appointment, you choose to purchase a microchip, vaccines or other services for your animal on the day of surgery, please let the staff know when you are checking in by marking the appropriate places on your paperwork. Click here for all prices and services.
2. To schedule an appointment, please call 704-333-4130 or 704-426-1053 or if you are comfortable providing credit card information by email to spayneuter@humanesocietyofcharlotte.org. Please refer to our FAQ section for additional information.
When calling or emailing, please provide your name (first and last), a contact phone number, each animals' name, whether each animal is a dog or cat, whether it is male or female, and the animal's age. For dogs, please also provide the breed and weight (approximate is fine).
3. We are open to anyone who wishes to have their animal fixed, regardless of the county or state you live in. (You do not have to be a resident of Mecklenburg County) All animals must be at least 8 weeks old and weigh 2 pounds to be eligible for surgery. Cryptorchid males must be at least 6 months old. We may recommend that your animal have pre-surgical blood work done by your regular veterinarian within 30 days prior to your scheduled appointment if your animal is 7 years of age of older.
4. We will contact you as soon as possible once your voice message or email has been received. We will offer you our first available surgery date and work with you to find a date that works for your schedule. We operate two spay/neuter clinics, one on Toomey Avenue and the other located on Byrum Drive. You will be offered an appointment at one of these two facilities. If you prefer one location to the other, we will try to accommodate those requests based on availability.
5. All animals must have current vaccines given by a veterinarian. Rabies vaccines can be given to animals at 12 weeks of age and older according to NC state law. If your animal is between 8 and 12 weeks old, a rabies vaccine will not be required. You will need to provide proof of the current vaccine on the morning of surgery. If your pet is not current on the rabies vaccine we can provide that for your pet on the day of surgery, along with several other optional vaccines. (our prices)
6. On the evening before surgery, please be sure to follow all pre-surgical instructions as they relate to holding off food and water to your animal. Click here for pre-surgical instructions.
7. Please bring your animal in on the day of surgery at 7:00 a.m. This is the only time we accept animals for surgery. We do not schedule appointments for surgery in the afternoon or at any other time of the day. Surgeries are scheduled by appointment only, Monday through Friday.
8. Animals must be picked up in the afternoon on the same day as surgery. For both of our clinics, pickup is at 4:00 p.m. There is no staff on site overnight at our clinic and it is important that you pick up your animal and continue its care at home where they will be most comfortable. Cuddling, pampering and spoiling that evening is highly recommend by our spay/neuter staff.
9. Your animal may need an e-collar if s/he is licking or chewing at the incision site. These are available for purchase at our clinics on the day of surgery. You may also obtain at either your primary veterinarians’ office or a local pet store. Your animal must be kept indoors and on low activity for 10 days following surgery. Dogs may go out for short, supervised leash walks to use the bathroom during that time. Your animal can not have a bath for 10 days after surgery. We recommend bathing and/or grooming your pet prior to the day of surgery if they are used to a regular grooming schedule.
10. Your animal will receive an injectable pain medication prior to surgery. We recommend that you purchase post operative pain medication for the 3 days following your pet's surgical procedure. You can purchase this from our clinics.
